I love chicken recipes, and fried chicken is at the top of my list!

I could probably eat fried chicken every single day and not tire of it.

Popeyes chicken is one of my favorite places for fried chicken. It’s a very close second to Lee’s Famous Recipe chicken.

How to Make Copycat Popeyes Fried Chicken Recipe

Popeye's Spicy Fried Chicken Copycat Recipe

Servings: 4 servings*

Ingredients

  • 3 Cups whole buttermilk
  • 3 Tbsp hot sauce such as Tabasco, divided
  • 1 2 1/2- to 3-lb. whole chicken, cut into 8 pieces
  • 3 large eggs
  • Cup water
  • 4 Cups about 17 oz. all-purpose flour
  • 2 ½ Tbsps kosher salt
  • 3 tsps cayenne pepper
  • 2 tsps black pepper
  • 2 tsps paprika
  • 1 ½ tsps garlic powder
  • Frying/Peanut oil

Instructions

  • In large bowl, mis buttermilk and 2 teaspoons hot sauce
  • Place chicken in buttermilk. Cover
  • Place in refrigerator overnight or for at least 8 hours
  • In separate large bowl, whisk water, eggs, 1 tablespoon hot sauce
  • In separate bowl, mix flour, cayenne pepper, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper
  • In large Dutch oven or electric fryer, heat oil to 325°F over medium-high heat
  • Remove chicken from buttermilk
  • Submerge chicken, piece by piece, in egg mix.
  • Then dredge chicken in flour mix
  • Shake off excess flour
  • Submerge in egg mixture again
  • Dredge in flour mix again
  • Shake off excess flour
  • Gently place chicken in hot oil. Do not overload Dutch oven or fryer. Allow space between pieces
  • Fry until golden. Approximately 8 - 10 minutes.
  • Maintain oil temp of 325°F . Chicken should reach an internal temp of 165°F to be fully cooked
  • Remove chicken and drain on racks or paper towels.
